Reading fluency is a critical skill for those who are working on their reading capabilities. Fluency has significant benefits, especially with regard to a deeper understanding of the literature. One of the best ways to build fluency is through a process of guided oral reading, which can be executed in a number of ways. Techniques include reading passages aloud and the instructor giving explicit feedback, having students listen to demonstrations of the proper way to read aloud and have them attempt to mimic it, having students repeat a passage multiple times until they can read it with fluency, and encouraging the students to read material that is interesting and pertinent to their lives. There is also a simple, coherent ten-step process for instructors of larger classroom sizes, to maximize efficiency and learning for each student.
