Why does my child struggle with math even though they’re bright?

Struggling with math says nothing about how bright a child is. Most math difficulty traces to how the subject was taught, not to the child. The top-performing countries teach math explicitly, build from concrete objects to pictures to symbols, and lock in basic facts so working memory is free for real thinking.

Is dyscalculia permanent?

For most children the difficulty is changeable. Number sense lives in a brain region called the intraparietal sulcus, and that circuitry strengthens with the right kind of practice. Researchers separate a smaller group whose brains process quantity differently from a much larger group whose struggle comes from instruction and missed foundations.

How do I help my child with math at home?

Keep hands-on objects out longer such as blocks or counters, build basic facts in short daily bursts until they become automatic, and slow down on the words, since math is language-heavy. Then apply the skills to real problems, not only drills.

Should I get my child screened for dyscalculia?

A screener is a useful starting point for knowing where to begin, but it is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If your child might need formal accommodations through an IEP or 504 plan, or you suspect a vision, hearing, or medical cause, pursue a professional evaluation too, since that is the route to those supports.
