Engagement and understanding are separate things. A fun task holds attention, and attention feels like progress, but it does not build skill on its own. Watch for whether the activity connects back to the concept underneath it. If it does not, the interest is real and the learning is still missing.

Is it bad to teach my child math tricks and shortcuts?

Tricks give short-term test scores that tend to fade, because they sit in memory with no meaning attached. The durable version is understanding why the method works. You do not abandon fluency and speed with procedures. You build them on top of understanding rather than in place of it.

My child says “I’m not a math person.” Is that true?

It is a feeling that got repeated until it started to sound like a fact, not a verdict on ability. Being a “math person” was never something a child is simply born with or without. Math is a skill built through the right kind of practice, and the story a child tells about themselves shifts as that practice starts to work.

Are manipulatives and visuals only for hands-on or visual learners?

No. Working from concrete objects, to pictures, to abstract symbols is a developmental order that helps every child reach the symbols. It is not a track for one type of learner. Matching teaching to a supposed learning style was tested in 2008 and again in 2024 and did not improve learning.
