Round Robin Reading or RRR has been a staple in classrooms for over 200 years. Students read orally from a common text, one child after another, the rest of the class follows along in their books. RRR stigmatizes poor readers, weakens comprehension and often sabotages fluency and pronunciation. Oral does improve comprehension, word recognition and fluency among children in lower grades. Better approaches to RRR of oral reading, are choral reading, teacher and class read a passage aloud together. Partner reading where students team up and alternate reading aloud. And echo reading where the students “echo” back what the teacher reads.
