Common questions from parents

Is my child lazy, or struggling with reading?

Laziness is the oldest wrong answer in school, and it was the answer Neil Jones got in 1970. Steady effort that leaves little on paper points to a skill gap, not a character flaw. The 2025 dyslexia update even dropped the idea that reading skill should match intelligence. Watch what your child avoids: avoidance that follows hard tasks is a signal, not an attitude.

How does play help a child who struggles with reading?

Play lowers the stakes, so a child practices longer without the fear of being wrong. Drawing-based tools like mind maps capture ideas the moment they arrive, and outdoor play supports attention while rebuilding family connection. Play sits beside direct reading lessons; it does not replace them. The practice still has to happen, and play is what keeps a child willing to show up for it.

What is a mind map, and how does my child start?

A mind map starts with one central picture and grows branches, one idea per branch, each anchored by a small drawing. Start with something friendly, like mapping their day or a favorite movie. The better the drawing, the easier it is to remember, so let it be colorful and personal. It works because ideas get placed instead of held in mind.

Should my child do a dopamine detox?

No. Dopamine is the drive that powers a child’s willingness to work at hard things, and it does not switch off. The fix is removing engineered triggers: charge phones outside bedrooms, keep feeds off the dinner table, and plan real play instead. Gambling counselors work the same way: they remove the trigger, not the drive.
