Unexpected Beginnings in Dyslexia Support
Many families discover that careers in dyslexia support can start unexpectedly. Donna Stevenson, head of training and assessment at Succeed with Dyslexia, shared her journey on the Dyslexia Life podcast. Initially a nursery nurse and primary school teacher, Donna took a career break to raise her daughter. During this time, she enrolled in a postgraduate course on dyslexia, which led to an opportunity at the British Dyslexia Association (BDA). What began as a six-month contract turned into a 17-year career, illustrating how a passion for helping others can evolve into a lifelong vocation.

Educators often find that their background in education provides a strong foundation for working in dyslexia support. Donna’s experience in the classroom gave her insights into the challenges faced by dyslexic students and a desire to remove barriers to their learning. This background not only equipped her with the necessary skills but also fueled her commitment to making educational environments more inclusive. Her story underscores the importance of being open to new opportunities and how personal experiences can shape professional paths.
