Why does my child freeze on math problems they knew yesterday?

Under pressure, the brain’s alarm system, the amygdala, reacts to a rushed or worried tone and pulls power from the prefrontal cortex, where working memory does math. The fact is still in there; the workspace to reach it is temporarily crowded out. A calm, unhurried tone is the fastest way to bring it back.

Does rushing my child actually make math harder?

Yes. Amy Arnsten’s 2009 work shows mild, uncontrollable stress rapidly weakens the thinking part of the brain, and Ashcraft and Kirk (2001) found anxiety alone doubled errors on harder problems. Speeding a child up adds load, which is the opposite of what a strained working memory needs.

Is my young child’s math struggle a sign of dyscalculia?

It might be, or it might be anxiety, a missed foundation, or a need for more processing time. A parent screener is a helpful starting point to see where your child is, and it is not a diagnosis. If you suspect dyscalculia and want formal accommodations, or you suspect a vision, hearing, or medical cause, a professional evaluation is the route to those supports.

How do I help with math at home without making it worse?

Drop the timer and give processing time, because silence usually means your child is computing. Present each idea more than one way, spoken, shown, and moved with counters, so it has several routes into memory. And name slow, multi-step work as effort, not failure, so your child keeps going.
