Italian Students Experience Immersive Math Lessons Through AR/VR Technology
Last updated:
If you’ve watched your child struggle to understand abstract math concepts, you’ve probably wondered if there was a better way to make these ideas click. You’re not imagining things—researchers have long understood that visual and spatial learning can unlock understanding that traditional instruction alone often misses. A new report from Italy shows exactly what’s possible when students are given the tools to see and interact with math in three dimensions.
TL;DR
AR/VR education technology zSpace has been deployed at I.C. Carducci–Trezza in Salerno, Italy, making it the first school in the district to implement the technology.
Students used 22 zSpace Inspire AR/VR workstations during a full-class mathematics lesson, showing high engagement and conceptual understanding.
Research is underway to examine how immersive technology can improve spatial reasoning, workplace safety training, and technical skill development.
The technology was featured during Italian President Sergio Mattarella's visit to the University of Naples Federico II medical complex.
AR/VR Technology Reaches Italian Classrooms
A leading provider of augmented and virtual reality solutions for education has highlighted its growing impact across Italy, where classroom implementation, educator-led training programs, and university research are demonstrating the power of experiential learning to deepen understanding, engagement, and technical skill development.
During a visit by a zSpace delegation to I.C. Carducci–Trezza in Cava de’ Tirreni (Salerno, Italy), the school was formally recognized as the first in the district to implement the technology. The visit included a full-class mathematics lesson using 22 zSpace Inspire AR/VR laptop workstations, immersing an entire class in a collaborative, hands-on learning experience.
During the session, students demonstrated high levels of participation and conceptual understanding, reinforcing the role of immersive visualization in supporting complex and abstract subjects.
Beyond individual classroom experiences, zSpace has also been implemented through educator-led training initiatives in Italian lower secondary schools. In collaboration with L’ABCD Edutainment, educator Marco Pisano delivered courses focused on zSpace and 3D graphics, introducing students to augmented reality and 3D modeling.
These programs highlight how immersive technology supports creativity, active learning, and foundational technical skills aligned with modern STEM and technology education goals. The partnership has helped introduce and scale zSpace solutions across K-12 education, higher education, healthcare, and workforce training since 2017.

From K-12 Classrooms to University Research
Inspired by his experience using zSpace in real educational settings, engineer and educator Ing. Raffaele Palladino has launched a research study examining the use of immersive technology as a support tool for maintenance operator training and workplace safety education. The study evaluates several key strengths of the platform, including immersive experiential learning environments, improved spatial understanding of complex systems, enhanced safety awareness through virtual interaction, and increased effectiveness in technical and procedural training.
zSpace’s role in advancing immersive learning in Italy has also received national-level visibility. During an official visit by Sergio Mattarella, President of the Republic of Italy, to the University of Naples Federico II medical complex, the technology was featured as part of the institution’s advanced educational and training environment.
Key Takeaways:
1
Immersive Math Learning: Italian students at I.C. Carducci–Trezza used AR/VR workstations for a full-class mathematics lesson, demonstrating high levels of participation and conceptual understanding.
2
Educator-Led Training: Programs in Italian lower secondary schools are training educators to deliver immersive 3D graphics and augmented reality lessons.
3
Research Applications: Studies are examining how immersive VR can improve spatial reasoning, safety awareness, and technical training effectiveness.
Bridging Education, Training, and Research
Together, these initiatives illustrate how immersive learning bridges K-12 education, professional training, and academic research, empowering learners to safely explore, experiment, and understand complex systems through immersive technology.
This work demonstrates the versatility of immersive learning tools—from engaging younger students in creative exploration to supporting advanced technical and safety training. Researchers and educators continue to explore how these technologies can scale across education and workforce development, with promising implications for how children develop spatial reasoning and technical skills.

Every child learns differently—and that’s exactly what the world needs more of. The question isn’t whether technology belongs in education, but how we use it to build skills rather than simply manage symptoms. The research emerging from Italy confirms what neuroscience has long shown: when we give children multiple ways to engage with complex concepts, more of them succeed.
Instead of waiting for a system designed around averages, parents can seek out approaches that match their child’s unique learning profile. If you’re ready to discover how to identify and develop the specific skills your child needs most, the Learning Success All Access Program offers a free trial that includes a personalized Action Plan—and you keep that plan even if you decide it’s not the right fit.
