Does dyslexia ever go away?

Dyslexia describes a difference in how the brain processes the sounds of language, and that underlying difference is real. But the science no longer supports “permanent.” Brain-imaging research by Shaywitz (Yale) and Temple (Stanford) shows that children with dyslexia develop the same neural reading networks as typical readers after intensive, appropriate instruction. The IDA’s 2025 definition explicitly moved away from the fixed, IQ-based model. The underlying processing difference persists, but its impact on reading skill is not fixed. A screener is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If your child might need formal accommodations such as an IEP or 504 plan, or you suspect a vision, hearing, or medical cause, pursue a professional evaluation; that is the only route to those supports.

Is extra test time enough support for a child with dyslexia?

Extended time removes processing speed as a barrier to demonstrating knowledge, which is a legitimate support. But it works best as a bridge while reading skill is actively being built through instruction, not as a long-term substitute for it. Special education research documents what happens when a support replaces the expectation that the underlying skill gets built: the incentive to develop that skill quietly disappears. The question worth asking alongside any accommodation: what specific reading instruction is targeting the root difficulty?

What kind of reading instruction actually helps kids with dyslexia?

Structured literacy, including systematic phonics and explicit decoding instruction, is the evidence-backed core, supported by the National Reading Panel and decades of replication. But reading draws on multiple processing systems, including working memory, processing speed, and auditory processing, not phonics alone. A child whose decoding is solid but whose reading still stalls often has a gap in one of those other systems.
