That is close to the fight now underway in Springfield, Massachusetts, where a public middle school is set to pilot the Alpha School model this fall and the teachers’ union has answered with a cease-and-desist letter. In the same week, the U.S. Department of Education sent every district in the country a different message: stop arguing about screen time, and start asking a harder question. It turns out the department and the union are circling the same point, and it is the one a parent needs most.

What happened

The school is Kiley Prep, a middle school of roughly 300 students in the Springfield Empowerment Zone Partnership, a cluster of Springfield public schools run under its own governance. Its students score well below state averages on the MCAS, Massachusetts’s standardized assessment. Starting in September 2026, one sixth-grade class of about 25 students will spend roughly two hours a day on laptops using Alpha’s AI software for math and reading, with afternoons given to project-based work tied to state standards. Families opt their children in or out. A certified teacher stays in the room, circulating and coaching rather than delivering the lessons. The district plans to add 25 more students and a second school in January.

The Springfield Education Association opposed the pilot and filed a cease-and-desist letter, raising the “quality and efficacy” of the AI and the project-based model, data privacy, and a rollout it called “rushed.” Its president, Riley Hernandez, put the objection plainly: “We need specialized teachers in different subject areas to help students learn.” Matt Brunell, the zone’s co-executive director, framed the stakes the other way: “We’re in need of doing something pretty dramatic in the wake of post-COVID learning losses. We can at least see if this strategy could yield some success.”

Alpha’s spokesperson, Anna Davlantes, said the network’s model has produced “exceptional” academic results over the years and that student data is encrypted. No independent data was offered in support of the “exceptional” claim; it is the company’s own characterization. That gap, as it happens, is the whole story.

Instructional technologies should be judged by their impact on learning, not simply whether they happen on a screen.

The frame the science supports

The fight in Springfield is being had almost entirely in the language of screen time and job protection. That is the argument the coverage reaches for, and it is the wrong one. Whether learning happens on a laptop or on paper, whether an adult or a program delivers a lesson, is not what decides if a child actually learns. What decides it is whether the software is built on the handful of things cognitive science has shown make learning stick, and that is a question a parent is fully equipped to ask.

A short list of those principles is well established and named. Roediger and Karpicke (2006) found that being asked to recall something strengthens memory more durably than re-reading or re-watching it, so a tool that has a child retrieve and produce, rather than passively review, is working with the grain of memory. Cepeda and colleagues (2006) showed the same practice time spread out beats the same time crammed together. VanLehn (2011) and Kulik and Fletcher (2016) found that what separates software that teaches from software that merely quizzes is not human versus computer at all, but whether the system engages a child’s reasoning at the level of each step, catching where the thinking went wrong and prompting the next move, rather than only marking the final answer right or wrong. And Kluger and DeNisi (1996), later echoed by Wisniewski, Zierer and Hattie (2019), found feedback is not automatically helpful: feedback that tells a child what to do next tends to help, while feedback that is only a red X sometimes makes things worse.

Set against that, the most common way ed-tech is sold is a trap the research has a name for: engagement mistaken for learning. Time in the app and lessons completed are engagement numbers, not learning outcomes, and treating one as the other is the oldest move in the business. As we would put it, a points system makes a child feel like they are learning; real mastery makes them feel capable. The federal government, in the same week as the Springfield story, landed on the identical point, telling districts that instructional technology should be judged by its impact on learning and not by whether it happens on a screen, and directing schools to demand of any product, in the guidance’s own words, “what evidence demonstrates that it improves student learning?” That is the question worth carrying into any classroom, this screen-time debate included.

So take them to any program a school proposes, this one included. Does it have my child recall and produce, or watch and click? Does it space practice out, or cram it? When my child goes wrong, does it work out where the thinking broke, or only mark the answer? Is the feedback a next step, or a red X? And when someone shows me results, are they from an independent test, or from a test the software itself was built around, which tends to flatter it? A parent who walks in with those five questions is harder to sell to than a whole school board.

Notice, too, that both sides in Springfield are already arguing inside the same frame, whether they know it or not. The union says, “We need specialized teachers in different subject areas to help students learn.” Alpha’s own co-founder says the software frees teachers for “what only humans can do — building relationships, inspiring confidence, coaching students through challenges.” Strip the heat off, and both are describing software as something that should free a skilled adult to do the human work, not stand in for them. The Springfield pilot keeps a certified teacher circulating the room, which is the version of this worth wanting. Software makes good practice pay off. It does not replace the person, and it does not replace the practice.
