What Google launched

On Tuesday, August 19, 2026, Google opened a dedicated Student Hub inside the Gemini app at gemini.google.com/students. Its own announcement describes the landing page as shortcuts for starting a study notebook, creating flashcards, and taking practice quizzes. It began rolling out that day to signed-in personal accounts, in every language Gemini supports.

Three things went live at launch. Flashcards a student generates from their own class materials. Practice quizzes, including sets aimed at standardized tests. And study notebooks, where a student uploads lecture notes and Gemini runs a diagnostic quiz to find gaps, then builds bite-sized lessons and quizzes and shows a progress dashboard. A separate feature, Deep Research, moved into Gemini Live, so a student starts a multi-step research task by talking, locks the phone, and gets a notification when it finishes. Google also offered eligible US college students a free year of its Google AI Pro plan, with students in other markets offered a lower tier.

Some of the most-quoted features are not here yet. Syllabus-to-calendar sync, which reads exam dates out of a syllabus and adds them to Google Calendar, along with photo-based worksheet help and support for school-issued and under-18 accounts, were announced as coming in the next few weeks, not shipped on launch day. The frame the science supports

Here is where the easy take gets it backwards. The reflex, when Google puts an AI near a child’s homework, is to brace for one more way to avoid learning. But look at what the core loop actually asks a student to do. A flashcard hides the answer and makes you produce it. A practice quiz makes you retrieve, not reread. That is the opposite of skimming, and it lines up with one of the more durable findings about how memory works.

The research is specific. Students who are made to recall what they read, rather than read it a second time, tend to hold onto it longer (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006). Practice spread across days tends to stick better than the same practice crammed into one sitting (Cepeda and colleagues, 2006).
