
You read to your toddler every night, and somewhere along the way they learned to talk without a single lesson. So it feels reasonable to expect reading to arrive the same way, if you surround them with enough books and wait for it to click. It does not work like that, and a new brain study helps explain why. Writing in Scientific American, Lund University researcher Mikael Roll reports that the brain has no dedicated center for reading at all, and has to borrow systems that evolved for entirely different jobs. Talking is an instinct your child was born with. Reading is not, and that has been true of every reader who ever lived.

What the study found
Writing in Scientific American, by way of The Conversation, Mikael Roll, a professor of phonetics at Lund University, laid out the puzzle plainly. Humans have been reading for only a few thousand years, which in evolutionary terms is almost no time at all. “Reading has existed for too short a time to have shaped a dedicated centre in the brain,” Roll writes. “Therefore, the brain has to learn to read using systems that evolved for other purposes.”
Roll drew that conclusion from a study he published in the journal Cerebral Cortex, using high-resolution brain scans of 1,068 adults from the Human Connectome Project, including a subsample of twins that let him separate what is inherited from what is shaped by experience. He found that reading ability tracked with the structure of several older brain regions, chief among them a patch next to the primary auditory cortex called the medial belt area, which is normally tuned to slow, coarse changes in sound, the kind that separate one speech sound from the next. In readers, that speech-sound machinery gets recruited for a job evolution never assigned it.
The study is a snapshot of existing adult brains rather than a record of children learning, and it measures how brain structure and reading skill line up rather than proving one causes the other. Roll also found that some of these traits are partly inherited. “Some brains might have an easier time learning to sound out letters, identify written words or access the meaning of words,” he writes, which is a point worth holding onto.

Why ‘it will click’ is the wrong bet
There is a comfortable assumption underneath a lot of reading advice: that if a child is read to, kept around books, and given time, reading will come on its own once they are ready. Spoken language works exactly that way. Children soak up talking by being near it, no instruction required, and that part genuinely is natural. The mistake is assuming reading is the same kind of thing.
It is not, and the science has been converging on this for years. Cognitive scientist David Geary calls spoken language biologically primary and reading biologically secondary: a roughly 5,000-year-old invention the brain never evolved for. Stanislas Dehaene has shown that reading works by recycling circuits built for other jobs, and Maryanne Wolf put it in one line, “we were never born to read.” Mark Seidenberg and the National Reading Panel land in the same place from the classroom side: reading has to be taught, explicitly and in order. Roll’s scans are a fresh piece of the same story, showing in the structure of the brain what those researchers argued from behavior. When something is not built in, it has to be built. How reading actually develops is a story of instruction, not of waiting.
The inherited part matters here, and it cuts against a tidy conclusion, so it belongs out in the open. Roll found that some children’s brains are set up to make this borrowing easier than others’. That does not mean some children are readers and some are not. It means the same instruction lands differently, and a child who needs more of it, more slowly and more explicitly, is not failing at something the rest get for free. No child gets reading for free. Some simply have further to carry the same load.

What it means for your child
If your child is struggling to read, the most important thing this research offers is not a technique. It is a reframe. Their brain is not broken, and they are not behind in some race every other child is winning by instinct. Every reader who ever lived had to take machinery built for hearing and seeing and press it into service for a job it was never designed to do. Your child is doing that hard, unnatural work right now. Some brains take to it faster, and that is worth knowing precisely because it means slower is not the same as unable.
What follows from that is a bias toward teaching over waiting. “Reading readiness,” the idea that you hold back and let reading emerge on its own, sits on the assumption this study undercuts: that reading is waiting inside the child to unfold. It is not. It gets built through explicit, ordered instruction, the sounds of language mapped deliberately onto letters. That is a demand on the adults around a child, and it is also good news, because a thing that gets taught is a thing you have some power over.
So watch for the moment your child is asked to guess their way to reading rather than taught to decode it, and lean the other way. Notice where the reading breaks down, whether it is hearing the separate sounds in a word, holding a sentence together, or staying with the page.
