You found a program that made sense. The tutor was consistent, the approach was evidence-based, and the early sessions showed something real. Naomi Eisenberger’s research at UCLA (2012) found that the same neural circuits processing social rejection and acceptance also regulate the brain’s learning and memory systems. A child who arrives at a tutoring session carrying shame from the morning’s reading group is not merely distracted. The stress-response system that fired during that experience remains partially active, and it competes directly with the cognitive systems the session is trying to engage.

Carol Dweck’s growth mindset research (2006, Mindset: The New Psychology of Success) adds the second layer. Children who understand that effort changes their brain approach difficulty as information rather than verdict. That shift in internal framing is not separate from the cognitive work. It is what determines whether a child re-engages after a mistake or withdraws from the task.
