The actual research, by Carol Dweck and replicated by Blackwell and colleagues in a 2007 study with adolescents, is more specific: students who believe their abilities develop through effort show greater persistence, seek better strategies, and engage more fully when difficulty arrives. In Blackwell’s study, students who received growth mindset instruction improved their math grades over the following two years; students who did not, declined.
