‘Tailored to your child’ is real. ‘Matched to their learning style’ is not.

The promise of a plan built around your individual child is the right promise. The popular version of it is wrong. The idea that a child learns better when lessons are matched to a ‘visual,’ ‘auditory,’ or ‘kinesthetic’ style was tested and did not hold up, first in 2008 and again in 2024. Yet a review of educators across 18 countries in 2020 found nearly nine in ten still believe it. That gap is not a science problem. It is a systems problem, and it has been running for almost two decades. For the longer version of how this myth shaped what ‘personalized learning’ came to mean, the story is worth knowing.

So what does tailoring actually mean? It means meeting your child at the skill they are missing, not the style they prefer. A child who guesses at words needs the sound-to-letter link rebuilt, whatever their favorite way of receiving a lesson. Tailoring is about the right target, taught well, with feedback that fits where the child actually is, which is the real lesson behind why the ‘average student’ a one-size lesson is built for was never real.
