How memory actually gets stronger

If memory is a skill, the useful question stops being whether a child has a good one and becomes what builds it. Two answers hold up more reliably than almost anything else in the science of learning, and neither is the one most families reach for first. The first, established most influentially by Roediger and Karpicke in 2006: pulling a fact back out of memory strengthens it more than reading it over again. A child who closes the book and tries to say the six times table from memory, then checks, holds it far better a week later than a child who read the same table five times in a row. The second, mapped across dozens of studies by Cepeda and colleagues in the same year: spacing the same practice across several short sessions beats packing it into one long one. Ten minutes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday outlasts thirty minutes on Thursday night.

One honest boundary comes with this. Strengthening the memory for spelling words, or number facts, or the steps of a science experiment, builds the memory for that material. It is not a workout that makes a child’s general memory bigger, and the memory-game apps that promise exactly that have a long record of improving the game and nothing past it. So the strategies earn their place worked on the actual reading, spelling or math your child is learning, alongside the teaching rather than in place of it.
