The trouble with the left brain, right brain story is not that it is comforting. It is that it quietly tells you to teach your child as a type instead of as a person. Once a child becomes the “creative one,” the reading and the math get filed under “not her thing,” and everyone stops expecting growth there. That is a heavy prediction to hang on a myth.
There is a close cousin of this idea that many schools still run on: the belief that each child has a personal “learning style” and learns best when teaching is matched to it. Researchers tested that directly in 2008 and found no evidence it improves learning, and the result was confirmed again in 2024. Yet a review across 18 countries in 2020 found nearly 9 in 10 educators still teaching to it. The science was settled years ago; the system has been slow to catch up.
