Your Child’s Brain Was Built to Keep Changing

The human brain is not a fixed organ. It keeps forming and reorganizing the pathways it uses to read, to reason, and to hold a number in mind, and it does this across the whole of a person’s life, not only in the earliest years. When a child practices the right thing in the right way, the reading network in the brain shifts: fMRI studies of reading intervention (Shaywitz at Yale, Temple at Stanford, Meyler at Carnegie Mellon) show activation in the brain’s language regions moving toward the pattern seen in strong readers, and in the longitudinal studies those changes were still developing a year after the instruction had ended. Two honest notes belong right beside that hope. Those studies measured brain activity, not a change in physical structure, and a 2022 review of 39 of them (Perdue and colleagues) found they do not all point to the same set of changes. What holds up is the direction, and it is the direction a worried parent needs: a struggling reader’s brain answers to good teaching. It was never the sealed box the label made it sound like.

When Melby-Lervag and colleagues (2016) pooled 87 studies of brain-training and working-memory programs, children reliably got better at the trained game and showed no convincing carry-over to reading or arithmetic.
