Students in New York are interacting with a new curriculum in schools called “Engage New York.” For many students, this new curriculum is opening entire new ways of thinking through specific types of problems and mathematics in general. The curriculum requires students to be able to explain how they solved a problem, not just to give an answer. In order to do that, students must have a deeper knowledge of the processes. Unfortunately, this has also involved using strategies (and homework) that many parents don’t understand.
