Common core is argued to be the new way of mathematical subtraction. It has been met with opposition by parents. Common core was created in order to help students understand what they are doing, and why the math looks the way it does. It was argued that ‘Old Math’ (which is done through borrowing and paying back) and ‘New Math’ (solved using regrouping) was simply allowing students to memorize the algorithm, while common core shows a process and solution rather than just an algorithm. It uses ‘counting up’. Only time will tell if common core will become accepted.
