Why “it’s genetic” was never the whole story

For decades a struggling reader or a child behind in math got one label and one cause: something inherited, something fixed. The International Dyslexia Association revised its definition of dyslexia in October 2025, its first update since 2002, and named the causes differently. It describes them as “complex” and involving “combinations of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental influences that interact throughout development.” Three forces, not one, and they act together rather than in isolation.

That third force is the one that changes a parent’s day. Genes and brain biology are real, and you did not choose them. Environment is different: the reading a child does, the way a task is taught, the emotional safety around it, and the encouragement in the room all sit inside it. The same 2025 definition states that phonological and morphological difficulties are “common but not universal,” which is the field’s own way of saying reading leans on several systems working together, not a single broken part. When a plan targets only the one everyone has heard of, the others stay in place and a child who made early progress quietly stalls.
