When it comes to the new generation of math we’ve grown accustomed to hearing the phrase “common core,” and while you may love or loathe common core, times are changing and we need to keep up with those times. In recent days in some West Virginia schools you may be noticing that your children are bringing math homework home with a little more problem solving, real world scenarios, and lots more critical thinking.

West Virginia schools begin to take a critical look at the current educational system.
One of the biggest issues that we face with math today is that we are unsure of how to help our children. Math isn’t the simple addition, subtraction, division, multiplication that we grew up with in the 80’s, 90’s, and 00’s. Some West Virginia schools are actively seeking solutions to make math a happier place again by involving real world scenarios that involve more critical thinking and problem solving. But don’t be afraid because the schools are working to improve how they teach and instead of students spending a few hours on one assignment they want a timer set literally. If that timer goes off and the assignment isn’t finished they want the teacher involved so they know weaker points to focus on in the classroom.
