This article is about Common Core-aligned math skills of kindergartners. One student in particular, Eric Onishchenko, ended up at a 2nd grade math level. This kindergartner’s passion of math stemmed from his energy to learn about money. Using iPads and competing against 13,000 other students, he came in 4th place nationally.

This article goes beyond the math genius that is Eric Onishchenko. Pioneer Elementary School in Washington State was ranked as #1 in the state and 4th in the nation. Students not only learn about math but learn how to tell time on analogous clocks and counting by fives. These students are very dedicated and passionate about learning. They have truly learned that hard work pays off.
Beyond the excitement of a contest, the serious purpose was to reinforce and introduce Common Core-aligned math skills as kindergartners through fifth-grade students prepared for their end-of-the-year assessments and the next grade.
