Diagnoses of ADHD seem to be rising, but are they reflecting an actual increase in cases of ADHD? The DSM criteria for diagnosis were changed about twenty years ago, but many countries don’t use these definitions. In fact, many cases are “parent-reported” and it’s thought some parents simply want access to stimulant drugs to treat ADHD, which are reported to help students do better in school, or access to school accommodations that allow students to take longer to turn in tests or homework.
