There are six million individuals in the UK that suffer from dyslexia, a condition that affects fluent reading and spelling. Dyslexia affects a small portion of the population but, individuals with dyslexia require additional assistance to be functionally literate. However, there is difficulty in proper diagnosis in identifying individuals with this condition, leading to no exact percentages known of those who have dyslexia.

The importance of a dyslexia definition
There are opposing views to the proper classification of dyslexia and its effect on the population. Dyslexia Action believes that the academic diagnosis of dyslexia is flawed in its methodology and its belief that dyslexia only affects a “tiny minority”. Dyslexia Action believes that prognosis of dyslexia should be based on severity and not on whether individuals can pass or fail literacy standards based on standard academic resources.
