Understanding Compulsive Buying Disorder
Compulsive Buying Disorder (CBD) is characterized by excessive and uncontrollable buying behavior that causes significant impairment or distress. It is not merely an indulgence in shopping but a serious condition that can disrupt one’s life. Research shows that 5.8% to 8% of people in the US may have CBD, with a striking 80% of those studied being women. This disorder often coexists with other conditions, including impulse control disorders, which are prevalent in various mental health diagnoses.

Many individuals with CBD use shopping as a way to soothe, escape, or regulate emotions. The act of purchasing provides a temporary rush or relief, akin to a serotonin boost. However, this behavior shares features with both addictive and impulse control disorders, including cravings, tolerance, and withdrawal-like symptoms. Recognizing these patterns is crucial for addressing the underlying issues and seeking appropriate help.
