Challenges in Diagnosing Autism in Girls and Women
Research shows that autistic girls and women often face significant delays in receiving a diagnosis. This delay can lead to severe mental health crises, as the unique presentation of autism in females is frequently overlooked or misinterpreted. Kathy Wel, CEO of Autistic Girls Network, shared her personal experience of her daughter’s diagnosis journey, which was fraught with challenges and misunderstandings from educational and mental health systems. Her daughter was 13 when a private therapist finally suggested autism, after years of no recognition from schools or CAMHS.

Educators often find themselves unprepared to identify autism in girls due to societal stereotypes and a lack of training focused on female presentation of the condition. This oversight can lead to girls being misdiagnosed with other conditions like anxiety or depression, further delaying the support they desperately need. Raising awareness among educators and healthcare providers about the signs of autism in girls is crucial for advocating earlier and more accurate diagnoses.
