Common questions from parents

Why does my child copy other people’s gestures and speech?

It is social learning. A child who finds unwritten social rules hard watches, copies, and tests to work out how to fit a moment. Researchers call it compensation, masking, and assimilation. Treat it as a bid to connect, and keep home a place where your child does not have to keep performing it.

My child forgets to eat or use the bathroom. Should I worry?

This usually traces to interoception, the brain’s reading of internal body signals, which runs at a lower volume for some autistic children. It is a signal-detection difference, not defiance. Outside scaffolds help: scheduled snack and water breaks, and a visible timer, do the noticing the body is not doing yet.

Does my autistic child actually feel empathy?

Yes. Many autistic children feel another person’s distress intensely and reach understanding by a deliberate, logical route rather than automatic mind-reading. The double empathy problem describes the gap between autistic and non-autistic people as a mutual mismatch, not empathy missing on your child’s side.

Should I get my child assessed?

A screener or checklist is a starting point that tells you where to focus, not a diagnosis. If your child might need formal accommodations such as an IEP or 504 plan, or you suspect a vision, hearing, or medical cause behind what you are seeing, pursue a professional evaluation as well. That is the route to those supports, and it sits alongside, not instead of, the everyday changes you make at home.
