
There are many different conceptions about the Montessori Method of teaching, but not all of them are accurate. One myth that needs debunking is the idea that only gifted children can attend Montessori schools. In fact, all children are welcome in the Montessori classroom, which strives to help children develop their own forms of intelligence. Another myth is that Montessori classrooms are a free-for-all, when in reality the teacher provides students with guidance while encouraging self-discipline. On the other hand, it is untrue that Montessori classrooms are rigidly structured – in reality, children are permitted to move around and work in a way that feels like play. Some perceive Montessori schooling to be outdated, but it is a tried-and-true method based in observation of children’s development and over 100 years of implementation. Finally, it is a myth that Montessori children don’t socially develop as well as other kids. Montessori teachers model respect for children, who follow their example. Furthermore, students often work in groups, or assist younger students, which encourage social development.
