The Casa Dei Bambini was the first Children’s Home to be established in 1907, Rome. Maria Montessori was the women who founded the home, and is responsible for the basis of the Montessori Method of education. The 50 Children she cared for were thought to be troubled and out of control, but Maria believed they had much to contribute. The house had a minimal amount of furniture, but the environment and the rules provided a space for the children to release their potential. In understanding how to get through to these children, and help them learn, she had to first learn from them. Understanding what the child wanted helped change the norms and restructure the educational system. Some principles of the Montessori’s system are discipline in free activity, order in the environment, and analysis of movements, free choice, and repetition of the exercise. Maria shows that by giving a child leeway, an adapting the learning environment to a child’s needs, will reveal their inner needs. The secret is to follow the child.
