Becoming multilingual has many benefits including keeping the mind sharp, increasing appreciation for other cultures, and increasing IQ and learning abilities. When given a test to read a color printed in a different ink (e.g. the word “yellow” printed in green), those with multilingual abilities could perform the test faster than their monolingual counterparts. This test is called the Stroop test. Some studies suggest that learning languages slows the aging process of the brain and stave off dementia. Another study suggests that the pleasure center of the brain is stimulated by language learning. Learning another language helps increase the ability to make decisions, as speaking a second language can remove the emotion from decisions.
