Somewhere along the way, most of us absorbed a handful of tidy ‘facts’ about the brain. We use only 10% of it. Some children are simply born clever and some are not. You hear them repeated so often that they start to feel settled, and then one hard week with your child turns them into a quiet verdict. Here is the gentler, truer picture: your child is not broken, their brain is learning differently, and almost every neat brain ‘fact’ you have been handed is either wrong or badly oversold.

The myths, and why they sell your child short

Start with the famous one. The claim that we use only 10% of our brains is one of the stickiest myths there is, and it has no basis. The brain is active and integrated; there is no dormant nine-tenths waiting to be switched on. It sounds hopeful, but it quietly tells a parent that the answer is some hidden reserve rather than ordinary, patient practice.

The second myth does more damage, because it lands on the child. ‘Some kids are smart and some are not’ treats intelligence as a fixed amount stamped in at birth. A struggle with reading or math and how bright a child is are not the same system, and one does not measure the other. A capable child who stalls on reading is the expected picture, not a contradiction, and calling it laziness only means the effort has not met the right method yet.

Both myths share a hidden cost: they turn a hard subject into a sentence. And children act on the sentence. ‘I am not a smart kid’ is not a description of where your child is; it is a prediction they are making about where they are going, and every small win quietly rewrites it. The real science of a changing brain, and the catch nobody mentions

Here is the part worth getting exactly right, because it is where the hype lives. The brain is genuinely adaptable. It keeps building the pathways for the skills a child works at, and a hard starting point is a place to build from, not a fixed ceiling. Hold that directionally rather than as a guarantee: in reading, brain-imaging studies from Yale (Shaywitz) and Stanford (Temple) found that the pattern of activity in struggling readers shifts toward typical patterns after focused, well-designed instruction, and across the wider set of studies the picture does not fully converge.

Now the catch. Notice what those studies trained: reading itself. The children practiced the real skill, and the brain followed. That is nothing like the promise behind most ‘brain training’, which is that a memory game or a speed drill on a screen will spill over into reading, focus or grades. When researchers looked hard at that promise, it fell apart. Simons and colleagues reviewed the whole field in 2016 and found good evidence these programs improve the trained task, and little evidence the gains reach distant, real-life skills. Working-memory apps make a child better at the app, not at reading or arithmetic. One well-known auditory program produced real brain changes in scans and still did nothing reliable for children’s reading. A scan that lights up is not the same as a child who reads better.

So the honest takeaways are quieter than the poster, and they hold up. Build the actual skill your child needs, practiced directly, because that is the thing the evidence supports. If you use a processing or ‘brain skill’ exercise, keep it running alongside real reading, spelling or math instruction rather than in place of it; on its own it has not been shown to move the schoolwork. Praise the effort and the strategy your child used rather than ‘natural’ talent, a small habit that helps children stay in the game when work gets hard. And let your child take on hard things and make mistakes, because difficulty engaged with, not avoided, is part of how the learning actually happens.
