The second myth does more damage, because it lands on the child. ‘Some kids are smart and some are not’ treats intelligence as a fixed amount stamped in at birth. A struggle with reading or math and how bright a child is are not the same system, and one does not measure the other. A capable child who stalls on reading is the expected picture, not a contradiction, and calling it laziness only means the effort has not met the right method yet.

The real science of a changing brain, and the catch nobody mentions
Here is the part worth getting exactly right, because it is where the hype lives. The brain is genuinely adaptable. It keeps building the pathways for the skills a child works at, and a hard starting point is a place to build from, not a fixed ceiling. Hold that directionally rather than as a guarantee: in reading, brain-imaging studies from Yale (Shaywitz) and Stanford (Temple) found that the pattern of activity in struggling readers shifts toward typical patterns after focused, well-designed instruction, and across the wider set of studies the picture does not fully converge.
Now the catch. Notice what those studies trained: reading itself. The children practiced the real skill, and the brain followed. That is nothing like the promise behind most ‘brain training’, which is that a memory game or a speed drill on a screen will spill over into reading, focus or grades. When researchers looked hard at that promise, it fell apart. Simons and colleagues reviewed the whole field in 2016 and found good evidence these programs improve the trained task, and little evidence the gains reach distant, real-life skills. Working-memory apps make a child better at the app, not at reading or arithmetic. One well-known auditory program produced real brain changes in scans and still did nothing reliable for children’s reading. A scan that lights up is not the same as a child who reads better.
So the honest takeaways are quieter than the poster, and they hold up. Build the actual skill your child needs, practiced directly, because that is the thing the evidence supports.
