It is important to develop writing skills in early childhood. Writing skills developed before school significantly predict later academic achievement. This is how our brain reacts to early writing because writing letters activates the reading circuit in 4 and 5 year old child and writing simulates the prefrontal cortex: attention, impulse control and working memory. Legibility and speed are the two strongest predictors of successful writes. This can be explained by the fact that the brain can concentrate on higher order composition skills when basic skills are automatic. Low skill level leads to increased frustration, poor motivation and a decreased belief in their abilities. So, what are the building blocks for writing readiness? Hand and finger strength, crossing the mid-line, correct pencil grasp, hand and eye coordination, bilateral integration, upper body strength, object manipulation, visual perception, hand dominance and hand division.
