
If your child has ever asked an AI to spin their class notes into a tidy study guide, watched it appear in seconds, and felt like homework was handled, you already know the quiet trap in the whole thing. A polished output looks like learning. It is not the same thing as learning. This school year, as the first cohort of Ohio districts operates under required AI policies and a major McGraw Hill survey finds most educators believe their students are already using AI for schoolwork, the question parents actually need answered is not whether the tool is on a screen. AI study tools are everywhere now. The question isn’t whether it’s on a screen. It’s whether the tool makes your kid do the thinking, or does it for them. Engagement is not the same as learning.
What the survey found
On July 29, 2026, McGraw Hill released its 2026 Global Education Insights Report, drawn from a Morning Consult survey of more than 1,300 K-12 and higher-education educators across 19 countries. It landed as students headed back to school in Ohio, where every K-12 public district was required to have an AI policy in place by July 2025.
What teachers reported was mostly about adoption and comfort. Sixty percent believe their students use AI for schoolwork, rising to 70 percent among US higher-education educators. Roughly 80 percent are comfortable with students using AI to build study guides and to translate. Nearly four in five say AI has saved them time, and they trust the technology more when it is embedded in an education platform than when it comes from a general-purpose chatbot. Worth being precise about what those figures are: they describe what teachers believe students do and what teachers are willing to allow, not whether any of that use actually teaches a child anything.
Teachers also drew a firm line. Nearly three in four said AI could not replace social-emotional support or the teacher-student relationship. On the aim of the whole thing, Philip Moyer, McGraw Hill’s president and CEO, put it this way: “The future of education will be defined by how responsibly and effectively we use technology to support teaching, deepen learning and build the skills students need next.”

The frame the science supports
Here is where the two loudest takes both miss. One camp treats an AI near a child’s homework as one more way to avoid learning. The other treats it as a study revolution. Both are arguing about the medium. The medium was never the question. The question is what the tool actually makes a child do.
Look at the difference between two apps that both live on the same phone. One makes your child pull an answer out of their own head, work a problem step by step, and get told what to fix next. The other writes the study guide for them, and they skim it. Learning science has favored the first kind for a long time. Being made to recall something, rather than read it a second time, tends to help it hold (Roediger and Karpicke, 2006). Practice spread across days tends to stick better than the same practice crammed into one night (Cepeda and colleagues, 2006). Tutoring that engages a learner at each step tends to outperform software that only checks the final answer (VanLehn, 2011; Kulik and Fletcher, 2016). One honest limit runs through all of it: that research studied classic tutoring systems, flashcard tools and human tutors, mostly before today’s AI chatbots existed. Whether those same principles govern whether an AI tutor teaches is a reasonable expectation, not something anyone has shown for these products. Treat it as the open question it is.
So where does a study tool go wrong? Not in the quizzing. It goes wrong when the point quietly shifts from the child remembering the material to the child staying busy. That is the failure pattern worth naming: engagement mistaken for learning. Time-in-app, lessons completed, a neat auto-generated summary that gets read once and forgotten, these measure activity, not what a child retains. A tool that makes a child feel like they are learning is not the same as one that leaves them capable. That trade is as old as the badge and the streak, and a slick AI summary is only its newest costume.

What it means for your child
Start with a test you own, one that outlasts whatever app is popular this month. Watch one study session and ask a single question at the end: did your child produce the answers, or receive them? A tool that leaves a kid able to work the next problem alone is earning its place. One that leaves them able only to tap for the next summary is not, however smart the app feels. That test costs nothing and it works on every product that comes next.
Then keep the tool in its lane. An AI that quizzes and prompts helps a child who is able to learn the material and needs the reps. It does nothing for the child who studies hard, uses every app, and still watches it slide off, because the block there sits a layer below the words on the screen, in a processing skill an app was never built to notice. If that is the pattern you keep hitting, a look across the systems your child’s learning runs on tells you more than another download will. A screener is a starting point, not a diagnosis. And hold onto the thing no tool replaces. The educators in this survey said it themselves: AI could not stand in for the teacher-student relationship. A well-built study tool frees up your time. It does not free your child from needing you. The strongest version of any of this is a child recalling, spacing the work out, and doing it beside an adult who knows them and notices when something is off. The apps will keep getting slicker. Your child still needs a teacher, and most days the nearest one is you.
