Dr. Shirley Disseler is attempting to make math more understandable to children of all ages and all over the world, using a universal tool. That tool in question is Lego’s. Through the use of Lego’s, Dr. Disseler hopes that children with notice an improvement in their understanding of fractions, multiplication, and division.

Children attending HPU’s STEM camps have already been exposed to her methods of teaching with Lego’s. Dr. Disseler associates America’s stagnant success in mathematics to a creativity crisis that reflects on how teachers are trained to teach. Dr. Disseler hopes that her three books will help to spark renewed interest in learning math for thousands of students.
Disseler’s Brick Math Series, published by Brigantine Media’s Compass Publishing, uses a common toy, Lego bricks, to teach math basics for students in elementary and middle grades.
