The fact is many students are arriving at universities across the country fully unprepared for university-level mathematics. Liberty University has attempted to address this issue through a new state-of-the-art facility called the Math Emporium. Rather than assigning students semester-long remedial lectures, Liberty assigns them a combination of lectures and “lab time,” which must be completed in the Math Emporium. As students move forward with their studies, they are given the freedom to follow the class pace or work ahead, allowing students to begin completing even the next semester’s assignments immediately. The success rate of students has risen tremendously with the opening of the Math Emporium and can be viewed as a positive example of using technology and self-pacing programs to teach mathematics.
