Jo Boaler, a Professor at Stanford University has discovered that the way we teach children how to do math can be damaging to their ability to actually do math. Learning math by using speed tests and rote memorization lead to students only comprehending math in specific math fact chunks. Boeler asserts that we should teach students math using more interactive techniques that don’t empasize speed and memorization. Rather if students learn math in a more supportive and eclectic environment, they will think positively about math, and enjoy learning math much more. Boeler calls the style of learning “Number Sense.” In this, rather than a student learning 5 * 6 = 30 in a factual sense, they can understand that you are taking the number 5 and adding it up 6 times. The experience is more rewarding for the student, and helps them want to continue to do math.
