Summers are spent by the pool or going on vacation but two students in the area have proved that summers can also be for learning if you are motivated enough. These two girls a senior and a sophomore spent five weeks out of their summer vacation learning in the Alaska Native Science and Engineering Program’s Acceleration Academy which is located at the University of Alaska.

They were among 60 students in total that were in the program where they spend the summer from all over the state working together to meet academic and professional goals. This is geared towards the program called STEM which is science, technology, engineering and mathematics field without limitations from classmates or even adults. Women are underrepresented in the STEM workforce, with the greatest disparities occurring in engineering, computer science and the physical sciences, according to statistics from the National Girls Collaborative Project.
