AI reading tools promise to help kids with dyslexia, and access is real. But here is the question that decides whether they help or hurt: is the tool building the reading skill, or routing around it?
What happened
In interviews with the News Agency of Nigeria this month, a group of stakeholders made a shared case for putting AI and assistive technology in the hands of children who struggle to read. Miss Praise Okafor, a health writer, described the appeal directly: “AI-powered learning platforms can provide alternative ways for children to access educational content. Text-to-speech applications, digital audiobooks and personalised exercises can make learning more accessible.” The piece frames the difficulty itself carefully, as “a learning difficulty that can affect a child’s ability to read and process written language, in spite of having normal intelligence and learning potential.”
What stands out is that the coverage is not a breathless ‘AI saves the day’ story. The stakeholders build in their own cautions. Chinedu Eze, a special-needs education consultant, was blunt about the limits: “Technology should complement the teacher, not replace the teacher. The effectiveness of these tools depends largely on how well educators understand and apply them.” Amina Bello, a primary-school teacher in Lekki, added that “teachers and parents must continue to provide encouragement, guidance and direct learning support.”
The group even flagged a diagnostic caution, that parents should seek a professional assessment rather than rely solely on AI applications to identify learning difficulties. It is a sound warning. But it is about how a difficulty gets identified, not about what a given tool does once the child sits down to use it. And on that second question, the one about building the skill versus working around it, six named voices stay quiet.

The frame the science supports
Here is the distinction the coverage skips, and it is the whole game: an assistive tool removes a barrier, and a remedial one builds the missing skill. Those are different jobs, and treating them as the same thing is the quiet error running underneath almost every ‘AI for dyslexia’ headline. To see why it matters, you have to know where the reading difficulty actually lives.
Dyslexia is not about your child’s eyes. The difficulty is in connecting the sounds of language to the symbols on the page. On this the science is settled and unusually united: four professional bodies, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the American Association for Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus, and the American Association of Certified Orthoptists, jointly state that vision problems do not cause dyslexia, that children who struggle to read have no more visual problems than anyone else, and that reversing letters is not part of the definition. Reading also draws on more than one system, and the International Dyslexia Association’s 2025 definition describes causes that are complex, involving genetic, neurobiological and environmental influences together, so no single account tells the whole story. But the barrier a struggling reader hits first is that sound-to-symbol connection.
Now look at what a text-to-speech tool does. It voices the words so the child takes in the meaning. That is genuine access, and for a child who needs to keep up in science or history while their reading catches up, it is worth having. What it does not do is exercise the sound-to-symbol connection, because the child never has to make it. This is not a fringe worry, and it is not anti-technology: the very guides that round up the best reading apps say the same thing in their own terms, that assistive technology removes barriers rather than teaching, and that building the reading skill still takes explicit, structured instruction. Special education research has long asked of any support whether it removes a barrier or quietly does the work the child needs to learn to do, and when that was tested directly, with word processors and older students, the benefit was not specific to the students who needed it most. There is no study in front of us behind the next part, so we hold it openly as our own judgement rather than as something the research describes: a tool handed to a child because it is easier than teaching the skill risks the skill never getting built.
