What the Alberta and York researchers reported

The project is led by Dr. George Georgiou of the University of Alberta and Dr. Robert Savage of York University, and the two institutions describe it as the largest reading intervention in Canadian history. About 1,000 struggling Grade 2 readers across five provinces (Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, Saskatchewan and British Columbia) took part. The design was small-group instruction, four times a week, thirty minutes a session, over roughly sixteen weeks. The lessons were not phonics alone: they combined phonological awareness, phonics, irregular-word reading and reading of decodable, level-appropriate books. Funding came from the Max Bell Foundation and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada.

The reported results are striking. Around 80% of the children improved by roughly a year and a half of word-reading growth, beyond what maturation alone would produce, inside that five-month window. About half needed no further intervention afterward. Around 10% showed no improvement, and about 5% went backward, which the researchers attribute to poor attendance rather than to the method. Taken together, the rate of progress for participants tripled relative to the growth ordinarily expected from maturation over the same period.

Two details matter for reading the number honestly. First, the comparison being tripled is expected, maturation-based growth, not a classroom taught with a different method. There was no guessing-based or balanced-literacy control group in this study. Second, these are press-released, preliminary findings, not a peer-reviewed paper. One parent told the researchers, “I have to sometimes tell my child to stop reading because we need to eat or go out — he is always with a book in his hands.” The York University release framed the wider goal this way: “By training school personnel in evidence-based practices, we can ensure high-quality primary instruction that prevents reading gaps before they widen.”

Why guessing is the wrong tool, even though this study did not test it

Here is a line the coverage tends to blur, so keep it sharp: the Alberta team did not pit structured lessons against a guessing-based classroom. There was no three-cueing or balanced-literacy comparison group in this project. So the tripling is not a head-to-head win over guessing, and it would be dishonest to sell it as one. The case against guessing is real, but it stands on separate, older science, and it stands firmly enough to name plainly.

Teaching children to figure out an unfamiliar word by guessing from context and pictures is called three-cueing, and reading scientists have spent decades taking it apart. Keith Rayner’s eye-tracking work shows that skilled readers do not skim and guess; they process nearly every letter, and they rely more on letter-sound information as they get better, not less. Niolaki and colleagues (2023), testing 641 children, found that whole-word knowledge predicted spelling accuracy better than sound-based skills at every age.
