What happened
The study was published in Frontiers in Education on April 1, 2026, by researchers at Hail University and the Islamic University of Madinah. It followed three boys, all around age nine, all in Grade 4 at one public elementary school in Yanbu, Saudi Arabia, each previously diagnosed with dyslexia. Across roughly 32 weeks, every session ran the same way: the child worked through an assigned reading passage, then saw an AI-generated illustration (made with ChatGPT) tied to that passage, then answered five comprehension questions.
The authors reported that comprehension scores climbed from near zero at the start to the study’s 80% mastery mark for all three boys, and held there at follow-up checks weeks later. In the researchers’ own words, each session “began with a structured presentation of one of the assigned reading passages and was followed by a visual explanation generated through the AI application.” The picture was never on the screen while the child was decoding the words. It came after.
The limits are stated plainly, and the authors are candid about them. This is a single-case study with three children, all boys, at one school. Their own words: “The limited number of participants and specific educational context limit the generalizability of the findings.” They also note they could not separate the picture from the other things they changed at the same time, “visual scaffolding, simplified explanations, and adaptive pacing.” So this is a promising illustration of a method, not proof that AI pictures move reading for children in general.

The way this study is being retold flattens the one thing that matters. A picture attached to a reading tool is not a single thing. It is two opposite things depending on when it shows up. When the picture appears after a child has read the words, it helps them understand and hold onto what they read. When the picture sits on the screen while the child is still working out the word, it hands them a shortcut, and the child guesses the word from the image instead of reading it.
This is not a soft preference, and the reading science is firm on it. Decades of eye-tracking research (Rayner) show that skilled readers process nearly every letter on the page and lean more, not less, on letter-sound information as they get better at how reading actually develops. Guessing a word from surrounding pictures and context is what struggling readers do.
