If your teenager does homework with an AI open in another tab, you have already met the question this launch raises. On August 19, as part of a Back to School announcement, Google rolled out a Gemini Student Hub, one place that gathers its study tools, practice quizzes, flashcards, diagnostic notebooks and conversational voice access, and handed eligible U.S. college students a free year of its paid AI plan. Some of what sits in that hub is built to make a student do the hard work of learning. Some of it is built to hand the work over. Google, to its credit, has built both on purpose, and this launch does not default your child into the one that teaches, so the steering falls to you.

Google just put a pile of AI study tools in front of students, and parents are trying to work out which of them actually help. Here are the questions families are asking, and honest answers about what teaches and what only looks like it does.

Is Google’s Gemini Student Hub good for my child?
The hub gathers some genuinely useful tools, especially the practice quizzes and diagnostic notebooks that make a student recall material and work through the gaps. It also gives open-ended access to an assistant that will produce finished answers, which is a different kind of help. Whether it is good for your child depends less on the hub itself and more on which tools inside it your child leans on. Steer them toward the ones that make them retrieve and reason, and the hub earns its place.
Do AI flashcards and quizzes actually help kids learn?
They help when they are used the effortful way. Testing yourself on material builds memory better than rereading it, a finding from Roediger and Karpicke, and practice spread out over time beats cramming, from Cepeda and colleagues, so long as the flashcards actually resurface on a schedule rather than sitting as a static deck. The catch is that a quiz only helps if the child pulls the answer from their own memory. Skimming and tapping through does little. The mechanism is the effort, not the screen.
How do I keep my kid from using AI only to get the answers?
Make the effort visible. Ask your child to show you the steps, not only the finished product, and steer them to the tools built to slow them down, a step-by-step mode like Google’s Guided Learning, or a quiz that makes them answer before it reveals the solution. The point is not to forbid the assistant; it is to make sure the thinking happened. A finished assignment and a child who learned something are not the same thing, and only one of them shows up on the next test.
How do I figure out where my child actually needs help?
Start by getting specific about where the struggle sits, since reading, math, writing and attention pull on different underlying skills, and a general study app will not sort that out for you. A free parent screener is a low-stakes way to figure out where to focus first. A screener is a starting point, not a diagnosis. If your child might need formal accommodations such as an IEP or 504 plan, or you suspect a vision, hearing, or medical cause, pursue a professional evaluation too, since that is the only route to those supports. What Google actually shipped

On August 19, Google introduced the Gemini Student Hub at gemini.google.com/students, a single place that collects its learning tools: starting a study notebook, making flashcards, taking a practice quiz, and more to come. The study notebooks, first launched in June, now include a diagnostic quiz that finds gaps in material a student uploads and generates short, personalized lessons alongside a progress dashboard. Practice quizzes and flashcards are free and available worldwide, with test-prep sets for the SAT, ACT, AP and others built through partnerships with companies like The Princeton Review. Eligible U.S. college students aged 18 to 24 also get twelve months of Google’s paid AI Pro plan at no cost, with a payment method required at sign-up and a redemption deadline of December 31.

Google framed the release around learning science and restraint. Its own post says the tools are “built to be safe by design and rooted in proven learning science,” with the goal “to bring lessons to life in the classroom and support personalized study at home, while keeping teachers in the lead.” Nick Fox, Google’s senior vice president of knowledge and information, added in a post announcing the launch that “it’s essential that we build our products in a way that steers students toward true subject matter understanding and skill development rather than cheating or shortcuts.” That is a striking thing for the company to say out loud, because it concedes the exact distinction this piece is about.

Here is the part worth slowing down on. The same hub that offers quizzes and flashcards also gives students conversational access to Gemini Live, and the two are not the same kind of help. Google knows this, because a year ago it shipped a separate mode called Guided Learning, built specifically to withhold direct answers and walk a student through a problem step by step, which Google described as “a collaborative thinking partner that helps you get it — each step of the way.” The new Student Hub does not route your child into that mode by default. It sets the tool that makes them think and the tool that will answer them outright side by side, under one friendly heading.

The tool that feels easier is usually teaching less

Strip away the branding and a clear line runs through the learning research about what builds durable knowledge, and it is not the smoothest experience. Henry Roediger and Jeffrey Karpicke found that students who tested themselves on material remembered more of it a week later than students who simply reread it, even though rereading felt more productive in the moment. That is the whole case for a practice quiz over a re-read, and it is why the quizzes and the diagnostic notebooks in Google’s hub are the genuinely promising part. The effort of pulling an answer out of your own memory is the thing that makes it stick, offered here as the direction the evidence points rather than a settled verdict about any one app.

Two more findings sharpen the picture. Nicholas Cepeda and colleagues found that practice spread out over time beats the same practice crammed together, which is what would make flashcards powerful, if the deck actually brings cards back on a spacing schedule the way dedicated review software does. Google’s materials describe making flashcards, not scheduling them, so that particular benefit depends on how the deck gets used. And Kurt VanLehn’s review found that tutoring which engages a learner at the level of each step of their reasoning teaches far more than software that only checks a final answer. The mechanism there is not human versus computer, it is how deeply the tool makes a student work through the thinking, which is exactly the line between Google’s Guided Learning mode and a quick request for the answer.

So the real problem was never Google, and it was never artificial intelligence in a study tool. It is an old and comfortable idea: that if something is engaging and hands over answers fast, learning must be happening. It is not. A tool can be responsive, personalized and pleasant to use and still leave a child knowing no more than before, because the child never did the retrieval. The parent’s job is not to ban the technology. It is to notice which of the two tools Google built their child reaches for, and to nudge them toward the one that makes them think, which is also why building a child’s willingness to stay with harder work matters as much as which app is open.

How to steer your child toward the tool that teaches

The good news is that you do not have to block anything or become an expert in learning science. You have to know which tools do which job, and Google has helpfully built one of each. The tool to watch is the open-ended assistant that will produce a finished answer, or a finished essay, the moment it is asked. There is a real use for it. Deep Research, the capability Google actually shipped under Gemini Live in this launch, runs a multi-step investigation and reports back, which is closer to a research assistant than a homework-answer machine, and used that way it is a fine thing. The trouble starts when that same conversational access becomes the fastest route to a done assignment, because a completed assignment and a child who learned something are not the same outcome, and only one of them shows up on the next test with no app in the room.

None of this makes an AI study tool bad for your child. It makes the choice yours, which is the honest place for it to sit. Ask your child to show you what they did, not only what they turned in. Watch for whether the tool made them retrieve, or handed them the result. A child who is coached toward the effortful tools, and toward finishing the thinking themselves, gets the part of this launch that genuinely helps, and skips the part that quietly does their learning for them.

Your child is capable of real learning, and real learning is built by effort, by retrieving what they know and working through what they do not, not by receiving a fast, tidy answer. You do not need to fear the technology or master the research to make a good call here; you need to know which tool does which job and point your child at the right one. The villain is not Google and it is not AI, it is a stubborn and profitable idea, that engagement and instant answers add up to learning, when the effort your child skips is the learning itself.
