Here is the honest answer: the label on the app will not tell you. A story out of a Washington, D.C. charter school this month makes the point better than any marketing page could. A teacher there built an AI math bot her school calls “gamified,” but the thing that makes it work has nothing to do with points. It makes students explain their reasoning for every answer, and it sometimes hands them a wrong answer on purpose, so a child has to defend their thinking against it. That mechanism, not the label, is what decides whether a tool teaches.

A D.C. school’s AI math bot has parents and teachers talking, and most of the talk is about the label on it. Here are the questions parents are actually asking about what makes a learning tool worth using.

What actually makes an AI tutor good?

Making a child recall and defend an answer is real work; handing over a finished answer to skim is not. Those studies predate today’s AI tools, so treat this as a strong expectation rather than a settled fact.

When a child works hard and it still will not stick, the block often sits a layer below the math itself, in a processing skill no app was built to notice. What happened

On August 18, 2026, Education Next published a profile by Tara Moon of Washington Leadership Academy, a public charter high school in Washington, D.C. and, in the article’s words, “D.C.’s first computer science charter high school.” It serves grades nine through twelve, and by the school’s own account about 30 percent of its students receive special education services.

The detail that matters sits in one paragraph. Niyesha Coleman, the school’s math instructional coach, “built a gamified chatbot that walked students through practice problems, offering hints and feedback in a voice trained to sound like hers.” What the bot actually does is the part worth reading twice. As Moon reports it, “Students had to explain their reasoning for every answer, and sometimes, Coleman noted, the bot got the answer wrong, and students had to defend their thinking against the incorrect response.” Coleman built that wrong-answer move on purpose. It forces a child to hold their ground and reason, rather than nod along.

Coleman says she has watched students grow more confident and more willing to take risks. She is careful about what that proves, and so is her school. The article states plainly that “WLA leaders believe it’s too early to draw conclusions about AI’s impact on their students’ learning, that the relationship between AI use and test scores or other formal measures isn’t yet clear.” There is no control group here, no before-and-after test, one teacher and one classroom. A separate teacher at the school built a different tool for AP Psychology that the article says more than doubled scores on practice questions, but that is a different tool for a different subject, and none of it is a study.

The term ‘artificial intelligence’ isn’t real because to be intelligent you have to be able to teach yourself. It should be called artificial prediction—all it does is predict answers.

The frame the science supports

Here is where most coverage of tools like this goes soft. It reaches for a label, “gamified,” and treats the label as the verdict. But the word describes nothing a parent actually needs to know. One WLA junior drew the real line himself: “The term ‘artificial intelligence’ isn’t real because to be intelligent you have to be able to teach yourself. It should be called artificial prediction—all it does is predict answers.” The tool is not the teacher. The mechanism inside it is, and that is the thing to look at.

And the mechanism this bot uses is the one learning science has quietly favored for years. A tutor that engages a learner at each step of their reasoning, catching where the thinking went wrong, tends to outperform software that only checks the final answer (VanLehn, 2011; Kulik and Fletcher, 2016). Feedback that tells a child what to do next helps, while feedback that only rates them right or wrong often does not, and sometimes backfires, worst of all for the child who is already struggling (Kluger and DeNisi, 1996; Wisniewski, Zierer and Hattie, 2019). Making a student defend their reasoning against a wrong answer is retrieval and reasoning, not recognition. That is the good pattern wearing a misleading label.

The honest counterweight is the part the word “gamified” should have warned about, and here did not. When a tool leans on points, badges, leaderboards and streaks, the research points the other way: those effects tend to be small, tilt toward extrinsic motivation, fade as the novelty wears off, and the badge-and-leaderboard layer is the one most likely to backfire (Sailer and Homner, 2020; Huang and colleagues, 2023; Toda and colleagues, 2022). Coleman’s bot, as described, has none of that. Which is the whole point: the failure mode lives in a specific mechanism, not in a word. One caution runs under all of it. This is one teacher’s tool at one school with no outcome data yet, and the tutoring research above was built on older systems and human tutors, before today’s AI chatbots existed. Whether these principles govern an AI tutor is a reasonable expectation, not a proven fact.

The apps will keep getting shinier, and your child will still learn most from effortful thinking done beside someone who notices when something is off.

It’s not good enough to just tell them, ‘This is how it happened.’ They have to see it in real time and kick the tires themselves.
