Sarasota County Transforms Middle School Into Innovation Hub With AI, Gaming, and Marine Science Pathways
Last updated:
If you’ve watched your child spend hours building virtual worlds or become fascinated by marine life, you’ve probably wondered why schools don’t harness that natural curiosity. You’re not imagining things—this is exactly the disconnect many families experience between what kids are passionate about and what traditional classrooms offer. A major new initiative in Sarasota County is about to change that equation dramatically.
TL;DR
Brookside Middle School in Sarasota County will become the Gulf Coast Academy of Innovation & Technology for the 2026-2027 school year
Partnership with University of South Florida enables pathways in AI, cybersecurity, game development, machining/robotics, and marine science
The initiative responds to Schools of Hope legislation, aiming to compete with charter and private schools
Sixth graders will explore all pathways before selecting a specialization in later grades
Applications open through March 2, 2026 with rolling admission through May 15
Middle School Transforms Into Innovation Academy
Brookside Middle School will reopen as the Gulf Coast Academy of Innovation & Technology for the 2026-2027 school year, offering coursework in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, game development and e-sports, machining and robotics, and marine science and agriculture. The school district has partnered with the University of South Florida to create programming that no other school in the area will be able to match.
Sixth grade students will begin with an exploratory year featuring advanced coursework before selecting a focused pathway in later grades. The school has reserved a maximum of 250 seats for sixth grade applicants and expects to attract students from throughout Sarasota County and even southern Manatee County. The district will provide transportation.
Strategic Response to Changing Educational Landscape
The project is part of the school district’s Future Focused Strategic Initiative, a long-range plan that expands educational opportunities while repurposing existing spaces. The initiative was created in response to the Schools of Hope legislation, which allows charter schools to occupy spaces and use resources at under-performing public schools.
“Our superintendent has been pushing for all of our schools to look at innovative ways to attract students and to be at the forefront of emerging fields, especially in technology, with AI and cybersecurity being really future-focused careers,” said Nate Francis, executive director of secondary education. Rather than losing students to charter or private schools, the district chose to reimagine what public education can offer.

Interconnected Pathways Prepare Students for Tomorrow
What’s revolutionary about this approach is how the pathways aren’t isolated silos—they’re thoroughly intertwined. Students in game design will learn about virtual reality, which is integrated into the medical profession. Cybersecurity skills apply across every field from artificial intelligence to robotics to marine science.
“We’re utilizing these areas that motivate and keep kids engaged, but we’re really teaching them lifelong skills that they can apply to any other area,” said Lindsay Gallof, principal of the Gulf Coast Academy of Innovation & Technology at Brookside. The school plans to retain its current staffing model while adding a dedicated encore elective teacher focused on marine research, agriscience and aquaculture.
Key Takeaways:
1
Innovation Academy Launch: Brookside Middle transforms into Gulf Coast Academy of Innovation & Technology for 2026-27 with five career pathways.
2
University Partnership: USF collaboration brings advanced curriculum in AI, cybersecurity, game design, robotics, and marine science.
3
Student Impact: 250 seats available for sixth graders with transportation provided countywide.
Community Partners and Looking Ahead
The school is working with multiple stakeholders including USF, the Sunshine State Esports League, Mote’s Science Education Aquarium, and Sarasota High School’s Carefree Learner floating classroom. The grant department is pursuing funding opportunities, and an advisory council with community and business partners is being assembled to support the initiative.
The window for school choice applications is open through March 2, with the school accepting applications through May 15. As Gallof noted, “I do have true faith that it’s going to happen and open with success… evidenced by the applications rolling in, and evidenced by the commitment of the district and the number of people working on the initiative.”
