Georgia Lawmakers Back Future Teachers

Georgia’s House of Representatives approved HB 310, the Student Teacher Promotion Act, creating a needs-based grant program for up to 500 student teachers receiving Pell Grants. Those participating would receive up to $5,000 to help offset the costs of student teaching, and upon completing their placement, an additional $2,500 signing bonus if they commit to teaching in a Georgia school.

The bill passed the House Education Committee with a single dissenting vote and now awaits consideration by the House Rules Committee. Representatives emphasized that the funding would help remove financial barriers that often prevent aspiring teachers from completing their preparation.
