What happened
On 1 September 2026, researchers at the University of Haifa and Tel Aviv University published a study in Scientific Reports, part of the Nature portfolio, titled “Instruction-based learning difficulties in developmental dyslexia.” Rather than testing reading, they tested something more general: the everyday human knack for hearing a new instruction and putting it into action right away. University students, with and without dyslexia, learned to apply verbally instructed rules that linked a cue to a response, some familiar and some brand new, across number and letter tasks.
The pattern they report is that individuals with dyslexia “demonstrate a reduced ability to implement S–R rules compared to neurotypicals, especially for novel S–R associations.” Most striking, the authors write, the dyslexia group “did not show the expected performance improvement during the first practice trials of novel S–R rules” that the neurotypical group showed. The team attributes the pattern to “atypical cortico-striatal networks” and frames it as a difficulty that reaches beyond reading into how a person builds expertise in an unfamiliar domain.
Two honest limits belong right next to those findings. This was an adult, university sample, not the school-age children most parents reading this are asking about, and the authors themselves put the broader reach in careful language, writing that it “may have implications” rather than that it does. It is a single study, newly out, without independent coverage yet. Treat it as a thread worth pulling, not a settled conclusion.

The frame the science supports
For a generation, dyslexia has been treated as one thing with one address: a phonological glitch in the reading machinery, to be fixed with enough phonics. Phonics matters, and it is necessary. It was never sufficient. The field’s own governing body has now said as much in writing. In October 2025 the International Dyslexia Association adopted its first new definition of dyslexia since 2002, and it states that “the causes of dyslexia are complex and involve combinations of genetic, neurobiological, and environmental influences that interact throughout development.” The single most telling line is this one: “Underlying difficulties with phonological and morphological processing are common but not universal.”
Read that again. Common but not universal. That is the field, in its own words, declining to treat the phonological account as the whole story. It does not name a replacement system and it does not hand out percentages, and neither will we. What it does is close the door on the idea that every child who struggles to read is struggling for the same reason, and that one method reaches all of them.
The new Scientific Reports study is a small, early data point pointing in a compatible direction: a dyslexia-linked difference showing up in a learning task that is not reading at all. We hold a multi-system view of learning differences, that reading leans on several processing systems working together rather than on phonology alone.
