The state’s Department of Public Instruction and its Board of Education have spent roughly two and a half years rewriting the high school math standards, and the plan is now close to a vote. Today, North Carolina requires four math credits, with NC Math 1, Math 2, and Math 3 all mandatory plus one course of the student’s choosing. Under the proposal, the requirement stays at four credits, but only Math 1 and Math 2 remain mandatory. The other two would come from an expanded menu that adds courses in statistics, data science, mathematical modeling, and logic alongside the existing AP and calculus options. So this is not a cut to how much math is required. It is a change to which specific courses are compelled.
Charles Aiken, the Department’s section chief for math education, tied the shift to the workforce. “Employers are telling us increasingly that calculus is less critical than statistics and data analytics,” he told Carolina Journal. Robert Luebke of the John Locke Foundation, the think tank whose Carolina Journal reported this story, welcomed the overhaul while naming the friction around it: “I’m glad to see math standards are finally getting an overhaul. It seems no one is happy. Our standards are weak.”
Not everyone in the process is sold. Board adviser Mariah Walker asked how the state would keep an expanded set of course choices from widening gaps for students who are already behind, with some steered toward easier courses while others move ahead. Rep. Hugh Blackwell pressed on why the revision was needed at all and what problems it would fix. The State Board vote is expected in October, and if it passes, the new courses would reach students starting in the fall of 2028.

Every version of this argument, more courses or fewer, calculus or data science, treats math ability as a fixed quantity a child either has or does not. And the person who named that assumption out loud is Aiken himself. The old single-track sequence, he argued, quietly excuses failure: “It allows this idea that math is just simply too hard; therefore, it’s okay if you don’t do well.” He drew the contrast that gives this story its edge. We shrug when someone says they are ‘not a math person,’ but, as he put it, “We don’t allow people to say that when it comes to reading.”
The science leans his way, though it asks for care rather than slogans. Math difficulty is better understood as sitting on a continuum of ability rather than as an all-or-nothing trait handed out at birth. Math is not a single gift you either receive or miss. It draws on a set of underlying skills that are built with practice, which is a far different starting point than deciding early who the math people are. This is a direction the research points, not a settled verdict, so it is worth holding without overstating.
There is one more thread worth a parent’s attention, and it also asks for restraint. In a brain-imaging study of children aged seven to nine, math anxiety was linked to heightened activity in a fear-and-threat region of the brain and reduced activity in the regions used for mathematical reasoning. That was a correlation in a single small study, not proof that anxiety causes low performance, and it measured a feeling rather than a child’s actual math ability. Still, it is a reason to treat a child’s panic about math as a feeling to work through rather than a verdict to accept.
