The teachers, who go by “guides,” spend the freed-up time on one-on-one conversation, community building, and a child’s social and emotional development. Dr. Tasha Arnold, Head of Alpha Schools, framed it this way: “We’re able to use AI in a way that personalizes student’s learning and also makes learning more efficient.”

Missing from the segment was any test score, any percentile, or any skeptic. The state context it did include is worth keeping: ABC11 reported that 41.6% of North Carolina’s school districts currently have their own AI guidelines, and that every district must adopt an AI policy by June 2027. It also cited an NPR/Ipsos poll released in June, in which 78% of K-12 teachers agreed that teaching responsible AI use belongs in the curriculum, while 54% said they believe AI makes critical thinking harder for students. That is a survey of what teachers believe, not a measure of what the software does to learning.

Alpha’s tuition runs $45,000 a year, and its marketing carries the numbers the news segment did not. The company’s own site claims students grow “2.6 times faster” than peers on nationally normed tests and that a majority land in the “99th percentile,” with its Raleigh classes “in the top 1% nationally.” Those are the company’s internal figures. As Wikipedia’s summary of the school puts it plainly, such claims “rely on internal analyses and have not been independently verified.”

The story sells itself on one word: personalized. The unspoken logic is that if a program meets a child exactly where they are, it must be teaching them. That logic skips the question that actually decides it. There is a real and well-documented difference between software that works through a child’s reasoning step by step, catching where their thinking broke and responding to that, and software that only adjusts how fast a child moves or checks whether the final answer was right. Our reading of the research, and it is a directional read rather than a settled verdict, is that the first kind approaches what a good human tutor does, while the second barely moves the needle. Genuine adaptive tutoring earns the label. Pacing and grading dressed up as intelligence does not.

Here is the honest gap: neither the coverage nor Alpha’s own materials say which kind this is. Alpha’s stack is described as adaptive learning software in the family of Khan Academy and IXL, not the reasoning chatbot people picture when they hear “AI.” Whether it diagnoses a child’s thinking at the step level or mostly paces and scores is the one question that would settle whether this is teaching or an expensive way to keep a child busy, and it is precisely the question nobody asked.

There is one place the model has been tested without the $45,000 filter. Unbound Academy, a public charter school in Arizona, runs the same “2 Hour Learning” model as Alpha but admits any child who applies. After its first full year, its math proficiency came in at 10%, against the school’s own projection of 60% and an Arizona state average of 34%. The math-education researcher Dan Meyer, who pulled those figures together, put the lesson in one line: “it is far harder to make successful students than it is to select them.” Perhaps Alpha’s reported gains are real. Perhaps they are telling you more about who a $45,000 tuition admits than about what the software teaches, and the coverage never lets a parent see the difference.
