That we live up to our own expectations has never been truer than perceived math ability. Studies were conducted in the United States, where math is considered a subject for boys rather than girls, and Singapore, where math is equally important to girls and boys. Perception of ability made a significant difference between the scores of girls and boys on standardized tests in the United States. Girls and boys in Singapore scored approximately equally on standardized math tests. Researchers are looking at further studies to determine how to overcome this cultural bias.
