Chicago police officers have initiated a public outreach program intended to foster an interest in mathematics and science among school age children. The initiative is aimed at children 6-15 and features a variety of activities for the youngsters as well as guest speakers who speak on topics as diverse as veterinary medicine and horticulture. The program is said to be largely successful, especially at conveying the knowledge that police officers are friends of the public and not people to be feared.
